Card Making: Where to Start!

Card Making: Where to Start!

“I want to make cards…but where do I start?”

If the above statement sounds like you, you’ve come to the right place! The Stampin’ Up! Annual Catalog is over 240 pages of awesomeness, but that can be overwhelming to someone new to papercrafting, and that’s why I’ve created this page!

If you’ve never seen a Stampin’ Up! Catalog before, you can view the PDF version here, or you can buy one here. You’ll want to look at it—or my online store—to decide what stamp set and colors you want to start with, but don’t let it intimidate you. The Catalog is your friend, and the more you stamp, the more you’ll want everything inside! 😉

So…back to stamping!

First, you’ll need to pick a stamp set. Pick something that appeals to you with a couple of different sentiments. You’ll also need to decide if you want Wood-Mount stamps, or Clear-Mount. (Read more about the different stamps we sell here!) I prefer Clear-Mount, so that’s what we’ll be using in this demo! I’m using the SOUTHERN SERENADE Stamp Set.

After you pick a Stamp Set, you’ll need some Cardstock. We have five color families, and I recommend choosing what color family you like best, and then picking an assorted Cardstock Pack in that Color Family. You’ll also want a pack of Whisper White Cardstock. I’m using the 2018-2020 IN COLOR 8-1/2in X 11in CARDSTOCK Pack.

Once you decide what colors appeal to you, you’ll need some ink. Pick one or two Stampin’ Pads from the Color Family you chose, and then add in a Momento Black Ink Pad for a bit more variety. I’m using the BLUEBERRY BUSHEL CLASSIC STAMPIN’ PAD.

Now, you’ll need adhesive to put everything together. SNAIL and DIMENTIONALS are my two favorite types of adhesive, and they are the easiest for beginners to use, so we’ll use both. (You can learn more about the different adhesives we sell here!)

Don’t forget the Envelopes! You’ll want to send your beautiful cards in equally beautiful envelopes, and Stampin’ Up! Envelopes are the best!

The only thing missing is a PAPER TRIMMER! It’s the only tool that’s a must have to get started, because you need it to cut and score your cardstock!

Okay, here are all of your supplies:

And here are two easy cards you can make right away:

Where to Start (4)

Ready to take it up a notch? You can easily step up your cards by adding in some Designer Series Paper, and some Ribbon. I’m using the 2018-2020 IN COLOR 6” X 6” DESIGNER SERIES PAPER, and the coordinating BLUEBERRY BUSHEL 1/8” GROSSGRAIN RIBBON.

For even more fun, add in some Punches! We sell CIRCLE PUNCHES in eight sizes, but you only need a couple to start! I’m using the 1-3/4” and the 2” CIRCLE PUNCHES!

Other helpful tools are a BONE FOLDER and PAPER SNIPS! (If you don’t use PAPER SNIPS, you’ll need a pair of scissors for cutting your ribbon!)

And here’s what you can make by adding the DSP, Ribbon, and Punches:

And that’s it!! See how easy it is? It doesn’t take much to get started, but once you start, you’ll never stop—don’t worry, that’s a good thing! 😉

Happy Stampin’! 🙂

PS: A NOTE ABOUT CLEAR BLOCKS…We sell nine different sizes of CLEAR BLOCKS for all of your Clear-Mount/Photopolymer Stamps. When viewing the Catalog, you’ll see a list of suggested clear blocks listed next to the price of each set. Eventually, you’ll probably want all the blocks—they are nice to have—but you don’t need them all. The SOUTHERN SERENADE set suggests blocks A, B, E, & H, but D is a very popular size. Because this is post is geared toward beginners, I’m only adding two blocks to the supply list: D & E. You’ll need both because some images in this set are larger than the D Block! (FYI: The block in the supply pic above is H!) 🙂
